The Gulf Jazz Society is proud to showcase the virtuosity of Andrew Tinch, a local young jazz guitarist who is destined for greatness. Andrew took up guitar just a few short years ago and in record time has become a skilled jazz guitarist capable of holding his own with experienced jazz musicians. He is currently about to return to the University of Miami Frost Music School to start his second year. During his freshman year at Frost, Andrew was quickly recognized as an exceptionally gifted guitarist and overall musician. His talent and outgoing personality have led to lasting friendships with key faculty members.

The quartet he will lead for this event is a mix of young and older jazz musicians. Andrew and the drummer Nigel Anderson constitute the “young” half and Steve Gilmore (bass), a 3 time Grammy winner and George Petropoulos (trumpet), a seasoned jazz artist from NYC, comprise the “older” half of the quartet.

The guitar dates back to Spain in the 16th century. Over 400 years later, during the early decades of the 20th century, the guitar was first used in early jazz bands, but almost exclusively in a rhythmic, chord strumming style. In the 1930’s, electronic sound amplification would open up the possibilities for the guitar to be clearly heard and guitarists to develop new styles of playing. Thanks to recordings, today’s emerging jazz guitarists truly have the advantage of being able to “stand on the shoulders of giants” to view the infinite possibilities of jazz guitar style and technique. Just a few of these “giants” would include Eddie Lang, Charlie Christian, Django Reinhardt, Tal Farlow, Johnny Smith, Herb Ellis, Barney Kessel, George Benson, Wes Montgomery, Joe Pass, Jim Hall, Ed Bickert, Emily Remler, Kenny Burrell, John Pizzarelli, Pat Metheny, and a host of others.

Alice’s on Bayview has a full bar and is well known for its excellent seafood, soup, salads, and sandwiches. Reservations are not required. Seating is on a first come-first serve basis, so arrive early in you have a certain table in mind.
