DESCRIPTION:The Gulf Jazz Society continues its tradition of bringing great Jazz musicians to Bay County next week with the trumpet artistry of George “Bepopolous” Petropoulous performing a tribute to the innovator of “Cool Jazz”\, Chesney Henry “Chet” Baker Jr. Chet Baker was known as the “Prince of Cool”. \nGeorge Petropoulos is a multi-instrumentalist originally from New York city\, now residing in Pensacola. He is proficient as both a trumpeter and keyboardist in a wide variety of musical styles and genres. Professional occupations outside of music have more recently included owning rental properties and pool lifeguarding. Current hobbies include swimming\, yoga\, and go-go dancers. Though usually serious in demeanor\, he has been known on occasion to “cut the fool” on the bandstand from having too much fun. Look out! This is a force to be reckoned with! \nThis September 13\, 2023 event will be held at the Historic Roberts Hall in Lynn Haven at 831 Florida Avenue in half a mile north of the 77 and 360 traffic lights and then one block west on 9th Street. (which is also one block west of the Lynn Haven City Hall.) \nDoors open at 5:30pm\, entertainment starts at 6:30pm. Admission is $10 for Gulf Jazz Society members\, $15 for non-members. Membership applications will be available for new members or renewals. Food and beverages will be available from the SPICE IS RIGHT Food Truck. \nThis is a BYOB event\, BUT ICE CHESTS/COOLERS ARE NOT ALLOWED. The Gulf Jazz Society will have set-ups available inside the event room.

And after performing in musical theater throughout the southeast in regional and dinner theaters\, she returned home to Panama City to start her family and began performing with The Swing Set Big Band\, and the Swift Shift Jazz Band.  She has recorded two jazz CD’s; “Tell Me This Day Won’t End”\, with Amanda Matthews\, for which she wrote the title track and also “Sharon Carroll & Company Live at Backstage Pass”. \nLast Spring she performed at the Pensacola Jazz Festival and in past years she has performed at Jazz Night at the District Pensacola and the Women in Jazz Night in Seville Quarter.  Sharon has performed at the Jazz Gulf Society’s Jazz By The Bay Festival and headlined the Celebrate Hope Gala at the Mitchell Candler Institute in Mobile\, Alabama. \nAdmission to our monthly Gulf Jazz Society events is $10 for members and $15 for non-members.  These funds along with our annual Membership dues is how we are able to bring great Jazz entertainment. \nCome in early to get a great sunset view and select from the delicious food and drinks on their menu.

DESCRIPTION:Three of Northwest Florida’s popular musicians will be appearing twice in August at the new Caffe’ Del Mundo 101S Bonita Avenue and corner of Cherry Street in Panama City’s Historic Cove district on August 5th and 19th.  The Victor Payano Jazz Trio consists of Victor Payno on a variety of horns\, Grammy Winner Steve Gilmore on Bass and Jill Wofsey on Piano.  They’ll be presenting Live Jazz from 6-8pm on these two evenings. Caffe’ Del Mundo translates to “coffee of the world”. They opened last fall in a building that used to be the Cove Laundromat before Hurricane Michael. It is owned by Marta and Jimy Thorpe. They feature Espressos\, teas\, nitro-infused cold brews\, gourmet smoothies\, during the day plus sangrias\, beer and wine in the afternoon and evening.  They also feature pressed Cuban Sandwiches with home-roasted pork\, authentic Cuban bread and fresh ingredients.

DESCRIPTION:The Gulf Jazz Society has scheduled an outstanding Jazz Trio for their August 16th event at the Shrimp Boat Restaurant on Beck Avenue in St Andrews – Panama City. The Cam Ray trio includes Cam Ray on the Piano\, drummer Lawrence Young Jr\, and Steve Gilmore on the double bass. \nCam Ray holds the distinction of being one of North Florida’s most sought-after pianists for both solo and group settings\, as well as an experienced private instructor and musical director. He has been playing professionally in the Southeast for almost 30 years.  \nA classically-trained jazz musician\, Cam’s diverse style includes Broadway tunes\, Motown favorites\, and mainstream hits. He has performed in a wide range of environments\, including 17-piece big band groups\, off-Broadway orchestras\, and Caribbean cruise bands.  \nCam has played with Aretha Franklin and was tapped to be the opening entertainment for the band Earth\, Wind\, & Fire. He played steel drums for a children’s benefit with Morgan Freeman as well as at a VIP dinner with former President George W. Bush benefiting Christ’s Church Academy in Jacksonville. \nLawrence Young Jr. was born and raised in Pensacola\, Florida\, and is the son of two career music educators\, Lawrence and JoAnn Young\, Sr. Lawrence currently serves as band director at Booker T. Washington High School. He is the director of the Marching Band\, Jazz Band\, Concert Band/Wind Ensemble\, percussion ensemble. Lawrence also is a freelance drummer\, playing with numerous groups throughout the area. Lawrence is a 1993 graduate of Booker T. Washington High School. He has a Bachelor of Arts in Music Education from the University of West Florida and a Masters in Education\, with an emphasis in music\, from Florida A & M University.  \nLawrence is very passionate about music education for young people and maintains a profound love of this community. Lawrence’s professional affiliations are Florida School Music Association\, National Association for Music Education – NAfME. Florida Music Educators Association\, Florida Bandmasters Association\, and Phi Beta Mu (International Bandmaster Fraternity) \nSteve Gilmore was born in 1943 in Trenton\, NJ and at age 12 began playing the double bass and during his teenage years he was playing with jazz groups in the Philadelphia area. At age 17 he enrolled at the Advanced School of Contemporary Music\, run by Oscar Peterson. In the 1960s he played with Ira Sullivan and the Baker’s Dozen Big Band. Over the past 70+ years he has performed in over 100 albums\, appearing with jazz artists like Phil Woods\,Tony Bennett\, the National Jazz Ensemble and a who’s who of internally known musicians. \nSteve and Shirley Gilmore moved to her hometown\, Panama City in 2007 and he quickly became part of a fledgling group of local Jazz Musicians who had started the Gulf Jazz Society in 1996. Steve was able to contact many jazz artists he knew and get them to come spend some time and play at the monthly events GJS was presenting. Steve now serves as Artistic Director of the Gulf Jazz Society. \nDoors open at the Shrimp Boat at5pm\, music starts at 6:30p. Get there early to get a good seat for the sunset view and dinner with your favorite beverages. Attendance fee is $10.00 for members of the Gulf Jazz Society\, and $15 for non-memberships.
