Mike Levine and Steve Gilmore in Concert

The Gulf Jazz Society concert May 5th at the House of Henry will feature the duo team of pianist Mike Levine and bassist Steve Gilmore. Mike Levine is a man of many talents whose career is a blend of different aspects of music. Mike attended the University of Miami, where he studied with Vince Maggio and formed a group with Billy Ross. Their first album “That Summer Something” in 1981 featured guitarist Pat Metheny. Mike has performed with major artists Nat Adderly, Mel Torme, Ira Sullivan, and Will Lee. His band was the opening act for such icons as Michael Franks, Gato Barbieri, Dionne Warwick + many others. He has toured worldwide with Raul DiBlasio, and has released three other albums, the latest “Just Chillin” in 2011.

Steve Gilmore was raised in the Philadelphia area and attended the Advanced School of Contemporary Music in Toronto, Canada, where he studied under acclaimed bassist Ray Brown. Steve then moved to Miami, where he worked with Flip Philips and Ira Sullivan. Upon his return to the NYC area in 1971 with a new family, Steve became increasingly busy working for forty-plus years with famed alto saxophonist Phil Woods, where he earned three Grammys for jazz performance. Steve also performed with Tony Bennett, Jim Hall, Al Cohn and Zoot Sims, Tom Waits, to name just a few.
